without understanding the fundamentals.
But without the basics,
movement does not become true dance.
At Hanagi, we begin with the foundation.
Posture, body control, and awareness
are essential before expression.
Just like ballet has barre,
and piano has finger practice,
Japanese dance also begins with basics.
This is not a place to only “dance”.
It is a place to learn, refine, and embody.

Online basic training is available.

Japanese Dance Artist
Japanese dance is not just movement.
It is built on discipline, structure, and understanding.
In many cases, people learn choreography without understanding the fundamentals.

Watch a short introduction
Wa-gokoro Terakoya is a gateway to experience Japanese culture.
This is not a place to memorize knowledge,
but a space to feel and understand culture through the body and senses.
Each session introduces different aspects of Japanese traditions,
allowing you to explore its depth.
Some elements are still in preparation,
and will be introduced during the orientation session.
No language barrier.
In today’s world, value is often determined by who created something.
But perhaps what truly matters is what remains within it.
I encountered these fans in a workshop in Kyoto—
materials that had quietly waited for years, never completed.
The name of the maker is unknown.
Their intentions were never recorded.
And yet—
there is something undeniably present in the work itself.
I am not an artisan.
I am a Japanese dance artist, someone who uses these objects.
That is precisely why I could not overlook something that would otherwise remain unseen.
A decorative fan is not a performance prop.
It is something that shapes the atmosphere of a space.
Quietly, yet deeply,
it touches the human spirit.
I do not wish to simply sell these pieces.
I hope to pass them on to those who feel a genuine connection.
